Gujarat Titans all-rounder Rahul Tewatia recently credited Ricky Ponting, the current head coach of Delhi Capitals, for helping him become a better player in all aspects of his game. Tewatia, who had played for Delhi Capitals in 2018 and 2019, revealed that he enjoys a strong bond with Ponting despite rumors suggesting otherwise.
Although Tewatia played only 13 games for Delhi Capitals during his time with the team, he managed to score 76 runs and take eight wickets. After an IPL 2019 match, rumors spread that Ponting had mocked Tewatia for wanting recognition for taking four catches in the game. However, Tewatia clarified that the rumors were unfounded, and he expressed gratitude towards Ponting for helping him stay mentally strong during his time with Delhi Capitals.
Tewatia stated to ESPN Cricinfo’s Cricket Monthly, that during his time with Delhi Capitals, Ricky had helped him improve his cricket significantly, and their bonding on and off the field was very strong. Tewatia was grateful and thankful to Ricky for his assistance, especially given what was happening with him in Delhi at the time.
Tewatia also mentioned that he had earned the respect he deserved through his hard work and skills, and not by merely talking about it. He elaborated that once the coaching staff believes in a player, the player gains confidence, and the team starts believing in them once they prove themselves repeatedly under pressure. He believed that respect is his right, which he should earn.
Tewatia, a Haryana native, established himself as a game-changer playing the finisher’s role for the Rajasthan Royals in 2020. He played a crucial role in Gujarat Titans’ domination in the last edition of the IPL and is also an integral part of the Titan’s setup in 2023.
